INITIAL RESPONSE:
Not only does the new Ping G20 Driver with TFC169 Tour Shaft feel light (despite a head weight around 7 grams heavier than the G15), but the paint job is a few shades lighter with a silvery gray finish that does a great job at absorbing glare and reflections. We tested this driver with a 45.75-inch shaft, making this driver feel as though it was designed to swing fast. Couple that with the elongated clubface, and you couldn’t have a more confidence-inspiring look at address.
PERFORMANCE:
Here at Golf Tips, we purposefully use “real-world” testing without robotic data and such, all in an effort to give you a real hands-on review of what we try. In the case of the G20 driver, we found that like Ping’s earlier game-improvement driver, the G15, the G20 is primed for extreme distance and forgiveness. Using an external weight system (with much of it applied low and away from the clubface), the G20 produces a high ballflight–so high that even we were surprised with the height the ball soared. Nevertheless, that’s not a bad thing, since the driver also produces a relatively low spin rate (which frankly, is contingent on how one swings the club). Shots hit on the toe and heel favored well, with minimal loss of distance and control. Despite the Ping G20 Driver with TFC169 Tour Shaft being long and straight, we actually found the club to present itself as a viable anti-slice driver, since most of our drives produced a high, right-to-left trajectory. In other words, we couldn’t slice it, which also meant we struggled to “work” the golf ball and hit fades or even lower tee shots. Instead, we had to accept hitting high, drawing bombs all the time…pity for us, eh?
EVALUATION:
A great driver, especially for moderate swing speeds and for golfers who want arguably, the most forgiving and longest driver PING has ever made. Better players however, may find the Ping G20 Driver to produce too much draw bias and too high a trajectory, but again, with such consistency and power, being unable to maneuver the ball is a moot detail considering how powerful this driver actually is. Maybe next time we’ll try the Tour shaft.

When the G20 first arrived to THP I couldn’t wait to open the box. For a company that doesn’t saturate you with marketing, PING managed to provide some subtle buzz leading up to this club’s release and once I opened the box I saw that the subtle buzz was well justified. Holding the G20 in your hand makes you just stare at the club in wonderment. You notice a powerful yet elegant shape made of titanium that just wants you to unleash it on some poor unsuspecting golf ball. Sure the profile is large and slightly elongated (460cc) but it’s not huge where you feel like you’re swinging a small SUV on a stick. When you first waggle the club you feel that the balance and weighting is perfect which is due to the shaft being weighted slightly above its center while maintaining the feel and weight of the club head. Although the external weight has been moved from the heel to the back of the club you barely notice it at address.
Technology
That poor golf ball has no idea what’s in store for it when the large face of the G20 smacks it with its variable wall thickness construction. The club face combined with the external weight found on the heel of the K15 driver is now placed directly behind the face of the G20 which means that the poor golf ball will get up in the air faster for you. The aerodynamic shape, or at least as aerodynamic as 460cc can be, combined with the variable wall thickness, the shaft that comes with the G20, and the external weight is really a nice package that is designed to help the golfer get the ball airborne and fast.
Testing
The Ping G20 Driver I received from PING for testing had a 9.5* loft and a stiff flex shaft (58g) and it was tested in almost every condition possible. Sunny, dry, wet, overcast, breezy, and cool all got their turn at interacting with the G20 so I think as far as elements go, this driver was exposed to everything but rain. It did experience some sprinkles but with the wet conditions that have been a part of NE weather the past few weeks it may have well been in rain-like conditions.

Specifically, the TFC 169D shaft has more flexible tip and butt sections for softer feel. The driver comes in 8.5-, 9.5-, 10.5- and 12-degree lofts. I tried a 10.5-degree driver with a regular flex shaft. That is well above average, but gone are the days of 7.5* Tour Models, and 13.5* High Launch models. Ping of course offers a litany of custom shaft options as well, but again, The TFC 169 model fits these very well. There is also a “Tour Model” version of the shaft, but my hands, wrists, and shoulders say it’s the same shaft that’s been tip trimmed for stiffness and lower launch.

The Ping G20 driver has a slightly wider face than the G15 and at address the head appears bigger, although not quite as large as the K15. This is achieved by a shallower crown and also visually by a lighter metallic silver finish. It’s interesting that Ping have moved away from black to something slightly lighter. It does look very good but is a little more reflective in bright conditions when compared to the previous black colour.

The size and shape of the longer head look much better than the G15 and the sound and feel at impact were excellent and the ball took off on a slightly higher but more penetrating trajectory than the G15. Tthe G20 driver also comes with Ping’s own TFC 169D shaft that seems a little more stable than in the past thanks to the higher kick point and feels quite powerful. There is also a Tour version of the shaft that will give you a lower trajectory and this will be excellent for those with higher swing speeds, so make sure you get custom fitted as the combination of shaft and loft will be important.

Ping-G20-Driver Review

The Club:

I tested the Ping G20 Driver 9.5 degree with a Ping TFC 169D stiff shaft. The Ping G20 was touted as the latest game improvement driver by Ping. Funny enough this new driver features a titanium alloy head, which is lighter than most drivers, yet is still heavier than the G15. The head design is unique however, which features an extremely low and back center of gravity to create a higher launch, lower spin and improved accuracy on off-center hits.
Looks:

The Ping G20 didn’t blow me away by any means – the driver and shaft graphics don’t shock and amaze in ways like the Adams 9088 UL could, but still the club looks solid. It sets up exceptionally well, slightly closed (likely to help those slicers), but really frames the ball well at address. Despite the clubhead having an unusual sole shape, the top crown is traditional – and pleases my eye just fine. The face bulge and roll is not all that noticeable on this driver – which adds credence to how good this clubs looks at address in my books. The head is a whopping maxed out 460 CC’s and the clubhead shows its heftiness – something that doesn’t suit my eye.
Performance:

I hit between 20-30 balls with this driver, and Ping has a new fan. Yes, this is a driver positioned as a “game-improvement” club, but Ping has created a golf club that performs extremely consistently – something all players can benefit from. There was something about this driver that just felt right – the swing weight (D3) / head weight / shaft combination felt perfect at address, and setting up, I felt like I could just pound it off the tee and know it was going straight. This driver was no slack in the distance department at all – with my swing speed averaging around 105MPH, and distance between 280-290 yards off the tee. Interestingly, this driver produced a significantly higher, boring ball trajectory than I’m used to (a sight for sore eyes to say the least). My ball trajectory for this 9.5 degree driver was between 11-12 degrees for most shots – and spin in the range of 3300 RPM. Workability was exceptional; again likely due to how the club feels at address, high draws and fades happened with little effort. In terms of overall feel, again the Ping G20 does not disappoint one bit. Off-center hits still felt solid, and center strikes produced great feel, and a solid sound (not tinny, not dull – just right). Accuracy was a final item to note – dispersion was quite tight with this driver, even off-center hits remained closer to our target line. When stepped on (I pushed this driver to 110 MPH) the shaft kept up, spin rates and trajectory increased slightly, but we managed to get some extra yards without sacrificing accuracy or feel.
Final Thoughts

Ping has a large variety of shaft options to choose from – but the TFC 169 model is already a pretty good fit. Take the time to test out some options at your next Ping demo day to give this stick a shot. The price point of only $350 is a nice touch by Ping – and makes this driver one to test for high to low handicappers alike.
